The Joseph Family

Willie Mae on front porch

At 99 years young, Willie Mae Joseph has a new reason to enjoy her afternoons, thanks to the generosity of Operation Finally Home along with our supporters and partners.

In Houston, Texas, Willie Mae Joseph, the surviving spouse of U.S. Navy Seaman First Class Percy Joseph, who served during World War II, recently received a much-needed replacement of her rear deck, providing her with a safe and comfortable outdoor space to relax and enjoy her home.

Percy served from 1943 to 1946 and was honorably discharged following his service. Although he passed away in 1997, his legacy of service continues to be honored through the support provided to his wife.

Living on a fixed income from Social Security, Ms. Joseph was unable to afford the necessary deck repairs on her own. After learning about Operation Finally Home from a friend who had also received assistance through the organization's home modification program, she reached out for help.

Through the generosity of donors and dedicated partners, Operation Finally Home was able to step in and provide the much-needed improvements. The deck replacement was completed by Jack Mastrangelo of Mirassi Construction, giving Ms. Joseph a renewed space to enjoy.

When asked how the modification has impacted her life, Ms. Joseph's joy was unmistakable.

"It's wonderful!" she shared. When asked if she was able to sit outside and enjoy her new deck, she enthusiastically replied, "Oh yes! Yes! Yes! I have a chair out there where I can sit and enjoy my afternoons. It's wonderful, and I appreciate that so much."

This project is especially meaningful because it builds upon previous improvements made to Ms. Joseph's home, including repairs to her roof, front porch, ramp and shower.

"I'm so grateful because I couldn't afford it," she shared.

The celebration didn't stop with the completed deck. Ms. Joseph also recently celebrated her 99th birthday, and members of the Operation Finally Home team visited her with flowers and balloons to help mark the special occasion.

For Ms. Joseph, these improvements mean more than home repairs. They provide comfort, safety, independence and the peace of mind that comes with knowing her home can continue to meet her needs.

Stories like Ms. Joseph's are made possible through the generosity of donors and the commitment of organizations like the Texas Veterans Commission, along with skilled construction partners who help bring these projects to life.

Because of this continued support, Operation Finally Home can honor the service and sacrifice of America's military heroes and their families, ensuring that surviving spouses like Ms. Joseph are not forgotten.

To everyone who gives, partners and supports our mission: thank you for making moments like these possible. Your generosity is making a lasting difference, one home and one family at a time.

"I have a chair out there where I can sit and enjoy my afternoons. It's wonderful, and I appreciate that so much!"
